My Christmas gift to you!

Hello everyone! It's Yael Perez again :)

With the Holidays approaching, I tried to think of a topic to discuss that would be fitting - holiday dresses, Christmas recipes, being fashionable in the winter cold... But, I decided to go with something more meaningful!

I know the Holiday season can be rough. It's a time where I know I've felt most self conscious, most sad, most alone. I'd like to reach out to all of you and remind you of something very important:

YOU ARE AMAZING. You are loved. You are beautiful inside and out.

(We don't hear this enough, I know!)

Your self worth is not tied to a number on a scale. Your self love is not related to which designer dress you get to wear to your office party.

Loving yourself and believing in yourself are a process, a journey - why not give yourself this gift for the holidays? By following this blog, you're already half way there!

Hello everyone!

My name is Yael Perez and I'll be a guest blogger here every month to talk about fashion, size in the media, positive body image, and anything else you'd like to see from me :)

For now, I'd like to introduce myself before I start posting regularly..

I'm a 26 year old plus size model and size acceptance activist. I've been working as a freelance model for the past 5 years. I've worked for local photographers, local designers, Addition Elle/Penningtons/MXM, and most recently have become the face of Sonia Levesque Design.

I also own and operate P.S. Montreal - a plus size lifestyle and culture resource: We offer a blog, a directory of stores and resources geared toward plus size women, a multitude of services ranging from photo shoot coordination to makeup classes, and more! We host an annual plus size fashion show benefitting ANEB Quebec - our next show will hopefully be in April/May of next year. When I was asked to participate in this blog, I had to jump at the chance - Drama Curves is an incredible project that helps to show off the curvy female form and inspire confidence in their readers. These goals fit so well with my own within the plus size world so I am more than happy to be here :)

Pourquoi / Why

Je pense que l'embonpoint est un des plus grand tabou des années 2000. Les gens semblent ressentir un besoin viscéral d'amaigrir les autres, lorsqu'ils voient un gros, ça les agresse. Je souhaite aller à contre courant, faire ressortir le beau dans ce que la société considère de laid. Je pense que c'est une ultime provocation pour les normes et un grand pas en avant dans l'acceptation de soi que de participer à ce projet. Chaque séance aide une femme à s'accepter et par le fait même aide les femmes avec leur estime personnelle.

I thing being overweight is one of the biggest taboos of this era. People seem to need to see others loose their extra weight, seing someone that is fat bothers and disturbs. I want to work against that, show the beauty in what society calls ugly. It might be provocative in the eyes of society's norms, but to me, it's a big step in the right direction to participate in such a project. Every shot helps one woman feel better about herself and in return helps other women with self esteem issues.

Pourquoi / Why

Je suis ronde depuis toujours, mais même si j’ai toujours
accepté mes courbes, je ne les ai pas toujours aimé. Aujourd’hui, avec Sublimes Rondeurs et avec la rencontre de jeunes femmes rondes et belles telle que Engel, ma photographe et partenaire dans le projet Drama Curves, Je suis capable de dire que malgré mon corps différent de ce que la société considère de beau, je suis belle. J’ai créé le projet photo avec Engel parce que j’aspire à aider les femmes, peu importe leur corps, à se trouver belles. Notre corps est le seul que nous avons. Malgré nos envies de le changer, pour différentes raisons, nous avons le droit au bonheur à chaque étape de notre cheminement. C’est aussi pourquoi je fais partie de la troupe Sublimes Rondeurs. C’est ma façon à moi de montrer à la société que mon corps est rond et que même s’il dérange, j’ai ma place, je suis importante, je suis belle.

I’ve always been big. Even if I’ve always accepted my
curves, I didn’t always love my body. Today, with Sublimes Rondeurs and meeting young ladies like Engel, My photographer and partner in Drama Curves, I am able
to say that even if my body is differents then society’s beauty standards, I am beautiful. I’ve created this project with Engel because I aspire to help all women, no matter their size, realize they are beautiful. Our body is the only one we have. We might want to change it, for whatever reason, but we are allowed happiness while the change is in progess. This is also why I am involved with Sublimes Rondeurs. It’s my way of showing society that my fat body might bother some, but I have a
place, I am important, I am beautiful.
